Mother's White (12+)

A dance and musical theater production about skin color and privilege in collaboration with AYA Danstheater

Shit! There they are again. I start walking faster and faster and look around to see if there might be other people around. But the street is empty and I can only go straight ahead now. Don't look back. Just when I think I've passed them, two hands grab my collar hard. Again. I fall backwards and hear my sweater rip. They laugh at it and call me names. It seems the most normal thing in the world by now, but how long will Mom believe it when I say I just fell....

Mother's White is a dance and musical theater production by Danstheater AYA and Silbersee. AYA's dance and Sibersee's music are accessible to a young and multicolored audience

The performance shows the relationship between a white mother and a black child; the mother sees that her child is up against different boundaries than she is used to. It feels powerless when you are looked at differently because of your skin color. Disbelief strikes. You can't let your child be someone else. Craving for understanding and acceptance intrudes. When is the moment that you as a mother take action?

Mother's White is about confusion of skin colors, privilege and the will to accept one another. In the process, Ryan Djojokarso knows how to approach distressing situations with humor like no other. A story that deserves to be told in words, music, dance and song.
