with compositions of György Ligeti and Raphael Cendo
With Aventures & Nouvelles Aventures, in the aftermath of war and uprising, the Hungarian composer György Ligeti set out to create an entirely new reality. Instead of a storyline with dramatic characters, Ligeti created acrobatic music: tableaux vivants that demand the ultimate of any performer. Ligeti embarked on a radical adventure and revolutionised the genre of opera.
Aventures & Nouvelles Aventures jointly form the midsection of the triptych Avventure di anima e di corpo, three physical, sensual operas in which singers and musicians unite to undertake a single physical performance.
For the two flanking sections, Silbersee has asked the composer Raphaël Cendo to take Ligeti’s bravura as his inspiration, giving him free rein as the enfant terrible of his day.
Cendo will create his opera for the same combination of performers as Ligeti, with the addition of electronics. His opera will centre on the Greek Minotaur, man as beast. Like Ligeti before him, Cendo will shake up the genre of opera.
In Avventure di anima e di corpo, with an ensemble of ten performers, we find ourselves trying to escape the Minotaur’s labyrinth. There is no dividing line between opera singer and instrumentalist. Every classical rule of opera has become passé. With dance, physical drama, raw meat and musical purity.
